Today with their mystery celebrity project, student gave clues in French and their classmates tried to guess who it was. We then went to the Crepe Truck where students ordered in French and had a yummy treat!! Students then took Quiz #4. If you were absent, please come see me asap to take your Quiz.

Homework for Apr 12
Today we looked at the different questions for getting to know someone, and each student wrote out their individual answers to these questions. With these questions/answers, in partners, students will record themselves having an interview on Monday.
Remember that the Crepe Truck is coming on Tuesday!!! We looked at the different types of crepes that will be offered and how students will order them. Please remember your money!!! (the most expensive crepe is ~$6)
The quiz and "Qui Est-ce" project are also happening/due on Tuesday.
Homework for Apr 11
Today as a warm up, students unscrambled various sports/activities and then made full sentences using jouer/faire. Next we looked at questions in French that we would ask someone to get to know them and find out what they like/dislike. Students did an inside/outside circle to practice asking and answering these questions.
Students were given a new project, "Qui est-ce??", and also were given information about their upcoming quiz. Both are due/happening on Tuesday.
Remember that the Crêpe Truck is coming on Tuesday also!...Bring your money (~$6) for a yummy treat!!
Homework for Apr 10
Today we practiced using Jouer+à and Faire+de in full sentences by playing a "Sports" Guess Who board. Next, students completed a Term 3 Self-Assessment form.
Students were given a small review package on Aimer+Infinitive and Jouer/Faire:
-Period 1 - entire booklet is due on Friday
-Period 4 - pg. 1, 2, and 3 due tomorrow; 4 and 5 due Friday.
Homework for Apr 9
Today we learned our 3rd irregular verb, Faire and how to conjugate it. We practiced creating sentences using Jouer à, Jouer de, and Faire de on whiteboards to describe activities/sports we play/do. Next, we did a listening activity on these verbs. For homework, students are to complete CA16, 17, and 18 for tomorrow. If you did not hand in your L'Affiche de Verb (was due today) please hand it in ASAP.
The last day of Term 3 is on Friday, so if you are missing any assignments, please be sure to hand them in by then!!!

Homework for Apr 8
Today we compiled a list of team sports and instruments, and then learned how we say “To play” using Jouer + à (team sports) and Jouer + de (instruments). Students completed a worksheet for practice, which is for homework if it was not completed in class. We then played charades to practice creating full sentences with sports/instruments as well.
The last day of Term 3 is on Friday, so if you are missing any assignments, please be sure to hand them in by then!!!
Homework for Apr 5
Today we looked at different celebrities (Jane Goodall, Bill Nye, Lady Gaga, Oprah, etc.) and analysed which personality types these people could be. Then we learned about using multiple verbs in a sentence with aimer + infinitive, and practised on whiteboards. Finally, students worked on CA14 and if it was not completed in class, please complete it for Monday. Bon weekend!
Homework for Apr 4
We corrected CA8 (and CA13 for Period 4). Students then practised creating full sentences using être and the different personality types (and their endings) through a dice rolling activity. Next, we looked at a personality test and determined its results. Afterwards, students took their own personality test and wrote a sentence about their most dominant personality types. Students received a new assignment, L’Affiche de Verbe, which is due on Tuesday, April 9th.

In Period 1, Mme. Zakus gave a short lesson on the new Flex schedule that will be starting next Wednesday.
For both periods, we went around the room and brainstormed various activities that go with each Personality Type. In period 4, we made a master list as a class for each (we will do this tomorrow in Period 1). We quickly reviewed ER verb endings, as well as how to make sentences negative. For homework, please complete CA8 (P1 and P4), and CA13 (P4 only).

Today we started Unit #2: Mosaïque, where students will learn to talk about what they like/dislike and their hobbies outside of school in French. Students were introduced to the 8 different personality types and got a glimpse at what each one means, as well as which activities go along with each one. Students received their Cahier (workbooks) today, and for homework, need to complete CA1, 5, and 6.

Today we reviewed the verbs Avoir and Être, as well as Adjective endings (masculine, feminine, singular, plural). We looked at various pictures and practised creating sentences using these verbs and modifying adjectives. For homework, students received a worksheet on creating their own sentences using this grammar, which will be collected tomorrow in class.

We learned how to play a modified version of Battleship to help practice numbers and letters. Students played with as many partners as they could in the time given.
In period 4, we were also able to practice time by playing Flyswatter.

We corrected the remainder of the handout, as well as CA42. Please see me for the corrections if you were away.
We went over CA40, which was a listening activity that we had previously completed, but not corrected.
We completed the prediction activity on CA38, then watched the clip to confirm our predictions. We then completed CA39 while rewatching the clip.
The criteria was given for your presentation for the solution of M. LeBlanc and we went over it. The time remaining was for students to select their solution and find at least two clues in their cahier to support it. Next period will be a work period.
Homework is CA37 and 43. A reminder that your comic strips are due next day.

The quiz was today (for Period 4) Please make arrangements with Mme Grossman ASAP if you were away to make it up.
We went over the study guide for your test. The test date, as well as the review date, have been added to the calendar. (Period 4 - Please see Mme Grossman for your outline, as it is different from Period 1).
We learned about possessives through a handout. We practised it using the exercises on the opposite side (Partie A only; Partie B is for homework if you did not get it done in class).
In addition to Partie B (if not done), please also complete CA32. A reminder to continue working on your comic strip.

We learned about the various terms for family members on CA36. We also added new terms. We practised using them with a family tree.

The Disparu(e)! assignment was collected; please hand yours in ASAP if you did not have it complete or were away.
We corrected CA33 using the whiteboards, and we corrected some of the exercises on the negatives handout. Please see me for the corrections if you were away.
I showed the class how to study the -ER verbs with a die and Quizlet cards. Each number corresponds to a pronoun (je = 1, tu = 2, etc). Use the flashcards on Quizlet, and put them on shuffle. For each verb that comes up, roll the die, then conjugate the verb to the pronoun that you roll. Then, write it in the negative. We did a few cards together as a class, then I circulated to check everyone's conjugations.
I distributed a handout on reflexives verbs, and we went over it. A new assignment was given, where you will demonstrate the use of the verbs through a simple story. Next class will be a work period. The due date has been added to the calendar.
An exit ticket of selecting and showing the verbs you will use for your project was given for the end of the class. Please start working on a rough draft for your story, as well as study for your quiz.

A handout was distributed with sentences demonstrating the negative. In small groups, student had to figure out how to make sentences negative and what rules need to be used. We discussed the sheet as a class afterwards.
We completed the listening activity on CA33 and corrected it afterwards.
Information was given for your upcoming quiz. Please study how to conjugate -ER verbs, choosing between the verbs avoir or etre in a sentence, creating negative sentences and a dictee (found at the end of your -ER verbs PPT notes). Please check the Links page for instructions on how to find my Quizlet cards; there are cards to help you practice choosing between avoir or etre in a sentence (as well as practising the verbs themselves), and cards to help you practice creating negative sentences.The date has been added to the calendar.

We learned about French punctuation, as explained on CA48. We then completed and corrected CA31
We learned about -ER verbs through a PowerPoint presentation. We practised conjugating verbs with small whiteboards. The handout of notes was distributed after.

Homework for Feb 26
We corrected the adjectives activity, found on the opposite side of the Sondage sur l'amitie sheet. Please see me for the corrections if you were away.
Using CA29 as a guide, we learned about the questions words qui (who), quoi (what), quand (when), ou (where) and comment (how). We then completed and corrected the prediction activity on CA24.
To prepare for reading the emails found on CA25-28, each student had to read and highlight les mots amis (word friends) and les mots deja connus (words already known). I also encouraged students to look up words they didn't highlight. We then did a guided reading of emails 1, 2 & 3 together.
For homework, please complete the thought maps on CA29-30 for all the emails.

The quiz was today. Please make arrangements with me ASAP if you were away to make it up.
We completed CA20, which was review of the verb avoir. Those who finished quickly were also given CA21 (adjectives) to work on (but we did not correct it). We corrected CA20.
A new project was assigned, where you will create a small poster for a missing monster, and we went over the criteria. The due date has been added to the calendar.
Time was given to start working on your missing monster assignment. Homework is the opposite side of the Sondage sur l'amitie sheet you were given last day.
Homework for Feb 21
We corrected the worksheets on avoir and etre. We used the whiteboards for correcting the avoir expressions, then did oral corrections with the remainder of the exercises. Please see me for the corrections if you were away.
I gave a handout where each student chose the top five qualities they look for in friends. We then discussed adjectives and looked to CA49 for more examples. We also learned about the acronym BAGS (Beauty, Age, Goodness, Size), used for adjectives that must go before the noun. We also learned about the two BAGS adjectives that are exceptions when it comes to clothing and hair: long(ue)(s) and court(e)(s).
We ended class by playing a game to help practice labelling body parts.
Be sure to study for your quiz next class! Remember, no word set for the body parts, so you need to know the spellings. Use the spelling test feature on Quizlet to help you with this.
Homework for Feb 20
We previewed the listening activity on CA18 by talking about what each person may be referring to with gestures, then completed and corrected the listening activity. We completed the prediction activity on the bottom of CA18, then watched the video clip to confirm our predictions. We then watched another video clip to enforce the strategy of using gestures along with body parts.
We took notes on the irregular verb avoir (a PDF of the notes can be downloaded from the Downloads and Assignment info page).
Homework is two handouts that were distributed in class; please see me ASAP if you were away for the sheets.
Homework for Feb 19
We took notes on the irregular verb etre (a PDF of the notes can be downloaded from the Downloads and Assignment info page).
I described a stuffed animal using colors and body parts. We then took notes on colors on CA17, then completed and corrected the activity on the page.
We then learned about body parts using CA51. We added the vocab for eye (singular), chin, hair and back; check with a classmate for what the words are in French.
For homework, please review the body parts vocab in preparation for a game we will play next day, and be sure to also review your notes on etre and colors.
I gave information for your upcoming quiz. Please study time, colors and body parts (no word set provided for body parts). The date has been added to the calendar. A reminder to hand in your time homework ASAP if you have not done so.

We corrected the large clock side of the time worksheet, and I collected the sentences and times for the small clock side. Please hand yours in ASAP if you did not have it complete.
We revisited CA11, then listened to the CD to confirm our predictions. We completed and corrected CA14.
We listened to the the CD again and filled in the missing information on CA15. We corrected the activity afterwards. This activity provides several clues to the mystery, so keep it mind for later.

We learned about telling time using CA47. We added notes to the 12-hour clock chart and discussed how to tell time. We also learned about using 24-hour clock to write time numerically and using 12-clock to tell someone the time.
A handout was distributed for homework. For all exercises on the sheet, you need to write down the time in 24-hour clock for number form (when needed), and write out the time in 12-hour clock. A couple of examples were provided on the board. The small clock side needs to be done on a separate sheet of paper to be handed in on Friday.
Your business card task is next class. Please ensure to have your 8 business cards ready to be exchanged, as well as your criteria sheet.
Homework for Feb 11
We learned about definite and indefinite articles using CA48-49, then completed and corrected the listening activity on CA8.
The possible solutions were shown, and we went over all of them. Please keep them in mind as we work through the mystery. Remember, it is Choose Your Own Adventure; whichever solution you think works, go with it!
We played a number game, where the class had to guess the number chosen and I or other students gave the answer of inferieur or superieur. This is an excellent game to use to help recognise numbers in French.
We completed the prediction activity on CA11 in preparation for a listening activity.
The business card task has been moved to Thursday, in light of the snow day.

Homework for Feb 7
We corrected the gender worksheet; please see me for the corrections if you were away. You can now use the booklet as a reference for looking up the gender of nouns.
Your first workbook was distributed; please see me for yours if you were away. If you still have not paid for the workbooks, please remember to do so ASAP. We went over the features of the workbook, then discussed the title and our goals for the unit.
We completed and corrected CA1, then learned about classroom objects through a PowerPoint presentation. The handout was distributed afterwards, and I explained it can be used as study cards. We also looked at Quizlet and some of the cards available for your use. You can visit the Links page to see instructions on how to find my cards.
Information for your first quiz was given. Please study numbers, days of the week and months of the year (know the spelling because no word set will be provided), and classroom objects (word set provided). The date has been added to the calendar.

We corrected the homework on celebrations and the days of the week and months of the year. Please see me for the corrections if you were away.
We practised the business card dialogue in full, incorporating the final pieces of our birthday and our phone numbers. Please continue to practise the dialogue as much as you can so you are ready for the task.
We learned about gender through a handout; the last page was assigned for homework.
The criteria for the business card was distributed and we went over it. The due date/presentation date has been added to the calendar. Remember, you will need to create 8 copies of your business card (1 for me, and the rest to be exchanged with your classmates).

We corrected the nasal vowels for the phonetics sheet. Please see me for the corrections if you were away.
We wrapped up the dictionary lesson and discussed which entry was the best to use to find the words we needed. If you would like to purchase a dictionary for yourself, it is suggested to look up the words that we had to work with (call, like, light, etc) to gauge whether the dictionary is a good one or not.
A handout was given on numbers from 1-100. We added two numbers (0 and 1000), then learned about the numbers. We practised numbers using our phone numbers with the business card dialogue. For homework, practice both home and cell numbers, and practice saying them in long form (ie six cent quatre, trois cent, six mille, neuf cent quarante et un). Please also start practising the dialogue in full, as we will soon set the date for the business card task.
We took notes on the days of the week and months of the year. We practised saying them, and also learned about writing the date in French.
Handouts were distributed for homework to identify holidays in French, as well as handouts to practice writing the months and days of the week.
Homework for Feb 4
We went over the homework for the phonetics sheet, then learned the nasal vowels, semi-consonant, semi-vowel and glide. Only the nasal vowels were assigned for homework.
We started working on the third dictionary exercise in class. I first showed the class some of the common abbreviations for different types of words. We completed the "call" entries together, then the class started working on the rest of the exercise. We corrected the remainder of the entries in class.
Homework for Feb 1
We went over the homework for the phonetics sheet, then learned the last four vowel sounds (the two Us and the two Eu's). They were assigned for homework.
Student volunteers offered one of the sentences they had created for 7/8 on the English sentences sheet, and they were put onto the whiteboard. The class copied them, then labelled the sentences and we corrected them. I then showed the French translations of each sentence and we talked about some of the similarities and differences in sentence structure.
We then completed the French sentence exercises, using the knowledge gained from sentence structure and the strategy of mots amis. We corrected the sentences afterwards.
In addition to completing the sounds homework, please ensure you are continuing to practice the first part of the business card dialogue. You are also welcome to start preparing your business cards (you will need to have around 7-8 cards).
Homework for Jan 31
We practised spelling our full name using the French alphabet with the business card dialogue. We then played a game where the class had to guess what name was being spelled. Please continue to practice the first part of the dialogue, as well as practice spelling your name.
We went over the first three vowel sounds on the phonetics sheet, then went over the two A and two O sounds. The words were assigned for homework.
We discussed the definitions of a noun, verb, adjective and adverb. A handout was distributed and we competed and corrected the first page of the handout. If you did not finish creating sentences in class, please ensure you have do so for homework.
Homework for Jan 30
We created our class seating plan. Please also pay the $15 workbook fee online or in the office, as you will be receiving your first workbook soon.
We learned the letters of the alphabet in French, then practised part of the business card dialogue with partners.
A handout was given on French phonetics (sounds). We went over all the consonant sounds, and I showed examples of words on the board. We then learned the first three vowel sounds.
Homework is practising spelling your full name using the French pronunciation of the letters of the alphabet, as well as finding the letters representing the sounds indicated on your sounds sheet for the first three vowel sounds.

We went through our portfolios to remove test or quizzes that were put in. I advised the class to keep the portfolio somewhere safe, as it can provide good examples for the Core Competency interviews in May.

Period 3 only: We learned about the futur proche through the cahier.
We learned about a, au, en & aux when talking about cities or countries, using CA42. We then completed and corrected CA7.
For homework, please complete the prediction activity (avant la lecture) on CA10. Next, read the article on L118-119, then confirm predictions on CA10 (apres la lecture). Finally, fill in CA11 according to the information from the article on L118-119.

We completed our self evaluation sheets for Term 1. Please see me if you were away so that you may complete a sheet.
The mini unit booklet was distributed. We discussed the word phenomene and what it means. We then looked at examples on L115. We completed the prediction activity on CA3, then completed the listening activity to confirm predictions. We then completed the listening activity on CA5.
We took notes on the board on the futur proche. We then created our own sentences, and I selected students at random (as well as volunteers) to share their sentences (Period 1 only).

I showed the top five inventions, as selected by the class. We discussed possible reasons why those inventions were chosen as the most important.
We completed the prediction activity on CA29, then read about the inventions on L86-87. We noted info on the inventions on CA30-31.

As I had forgotten to do it for Period 1, we went over demonstrative adjectives on CA40. These will appear on your quiz.
The inventions presentations were today. After the presentations, students filled in the chart found on the back of the sample project (telephone cellulaire) by choosing what they felt were the five most important/impactful inventions that were presented. This was handed in, along with your written pieces.

We looked at the strange inventions found on L83-85, and discussed each briefly. We then did the listening piece for the info-invention Scrap Arts Music.
We looked at demonstative adjectives on CA40, which will be on your quiz this Thursday (Period 4 only).
I showed pictures of three different inventions and we discussed their importance and how they have made an impact. They were all inventions created by Canadians.
A new mini assignment was given, where each student will do a very short presentation on an invention next day. Students were selected at random to come and choose their invention.

Period 1: As there was still no power, we essentially had a social period.
Period 4: The power was restored, so we were able to watch a little bit of "Ratatouille" (but we will not be finishing the movie upon return from the break).

We reviewed the verbs found in the rolling can instructions on L78-79. We then read and discussed the info-invention piece.
Using the images on L80-82, students worked in small groups to find verbs that would help to explain the instructions for the inventions. We went over them afterwards.

We corrected CA7C. Please see me for the corrections if you were away. Using CA10 and the whiteboards, we created sentences using specific verbs
I displayed several items on the desk and we talked about each item (materials, what could they be reused for). We then completed the prediction activity on CA12-13.
Using L78-79, we corrected the prediction activity. I then went through the instructions and demonstrated to the class how to put together the items to make the rolling can. The class formed small groups to put together their cans. We noted our observations on CA13.

I asked students to select an object from their things and show it to the class. We discussed the materials they are made of, as well as whether any of the materials (or the objects themselves) are reusable or recyclable. We also discussed things that we reuse or recycle at home.

To help us think about how much food costs in restaurant, we did an activity where students had to select menu items and note down their prices from six different restaurant menus. We then discussed which ones were the most expensive, cheapest, mid-range and which new restaurant we would try, then talked about what drives the price of food.
We completed CA22 (with our partner, if we had one), then looked over the cost and profit calculations on CA24. To prepare for doing the activity with our own recipes, please research the prices of your various ingredients. Please also complete CA21, 23 & 25.

We corrected CA20, as well as the utensiles and infinitive verbs handout. I showed the class Christine Cushing's website, and we looked at some of the things she has been doing lately.
We then looked at the recipes handout and discussed some of the ways the recipes could be changed. The rest of the time was used to work on creating the recipe for our restaurant speciality, as well as our menu. The draft was handed in at the end of the period.

We learned about the difference between the imperative and the infinitive using L156 as examples.
We listened to the CD while following along with the reading on L32, then discussed it afterwards. I then talked about the origins of the croque-monsieur. I showed the class a picture of a croque-madam that I had in Paris.
We learned about -RE verbs through a PowerPoint presentation. Each student was given a small whiteboard to conjugate the verbs for the practice section of the presentation. I gave the handout of the notes afterwards and gave info on the quiz outlined at the end of the notes. The date has been added to the calendar.
Homework is CA19-20, as well as a handout of recipes where you need to modify the ingredients for each recipe, and a handout on kitchen tools and the infinitive.

We brainstormed the type of info one might ask in an interview, then looked for this info in the interview on L12-13. I had volunteers read the interview, then we discussed the info afterwards.
We completed and corrected CA19. I selected questions from CA19 to use for the partner activity on CA20, and time was given for students to prepare their answers for all the questions. We completed the activity with a partner.

We did a quick Halloween activity where we learned the French names for monsters, then wrote descriptions about them.

Using L10-11 as a visual, we listened to a song then identified the activities that were in the song as well as in the livre (Period 1 only)

We reviewed the formation of -ER verbs, as well as how to create negative sentences. We then took notes on using two verbs in a sentence and making those sentences negative; you can download the notes from the Downloads and Assignment info page if you were away. We also created our own sentences.

We revisited the brainstorming sheets we created the previous class, this time writing down activities that each personality type may enjoy doing. We discussed them afterwards.
We went over some of the personality test on L6 together, then I assigned the remaining personality types to the class to read and calculate the totals. We figured out what the two dominant personalities were and who took the test (using CA2).

The portfolios will stay in the room, so you will be able to add to it as we go through the remainder of the semester.

Having your binder organized into different sections will make it easier for you to quickly locate different handouts or notes from class. Here is a suggestion for this class:
-Cahier: have one section specifically for your workbooks which you will receive over the year
-Notes: this will be for any notes that I give you in class on the whiteboard or the overhead projector
-PowerPoints: I will be giving you a few PPTs over the year, and you can keep them all together here
-Handouts: For any and all handouts you receive in class.
-Assignments: For smaller projects/assignments that I return to you and for assignments that need to be handed in
