-The conjunctions "au," "du," "à la," and "de la" were explained to them. -Students were shown the names of various sports and physical activities in French while taking notes. -Students practiced in small groups talking about what sports and activities they enjoy doing. -Toward the end, students were introduced to a third expression, "Jouer de," used in the context of musical instruments. -the students were each given a food item (card) and attempted to class themselves into groups based on what they thought the three categories of the Canadian Food Guide might be. The teacher then asked them to describe the logic behind their choices of groupings. -we then discussed the three broad categories of the Canadian Food Guide (Guide alimentaire canadien) and its dietary recommendations. -Finally, students were shown a study games website to help them prepare for the vocab portions of the quiz on Friday: https://www.digitaldialects.com/French.htm Homework for Apr 5-learned some characteristics of snacks (spicy/mild, crunchy/soft, sweet/savoury), and expressed their preferences with respect to these.
-practiced with the structures "J'aime manger" and "Je préfère manger" that they have now seen a couple of times. -familiarized themselves with new vocabulary presented today through a scavenger hunt in which they tried to match descriptions with images of food items. Homework for Apr 4-reviewed food vocabulary, with a focus on fruit and vegetables, by going through a slide presentation. Students were asked to identify the food items they could see. Students were also asked to reflect on factors that affect access to food.
-played a game of Kahoot involving food and vegetable vocabulary. Homework for Apr 3-discussed the names of the different mealtimes in French, noting the distinction between Quebec and France.

-students either created their family tree or drew pictures of close family members; in small groups, students practiced simple questions about family and practiced using possessives in their responses Homework for Mar 14-students were introduced to family vocabulary through a PowerPoint presentation of M. Farquharson's family
-students were also given a preview of possessives Homework for Mar 13Reflexive verbs were reviewed by watching a Mr Bean clip and listing the different verbs that he demonstrated. Students also began working on some of their sentences needed for their project. Class concluded with practice for conjugating reflexive verbs.
Homework for Mar 12Morning routines and related reflexive verbs were reviewed with the help of a video demonstration by Chulo the golden retriever. Students were instructed to watch the video carefully and record at least three things Chulo does as part of his morning routine (transitioning from Je to Il). Finally, students wrote their own morning routines using a combination of reflexive and non-reflexive verbs, along with the chronological linking words D'abord, ensuite, puis, and enfin. The relevance of this to the upcoming unit project was briefly mentioned.
Homework for Mar 11**M Farquharson's practicum has officially begun; Mme Zakus will continue to provide summaries of what was done in class
Students were introduced to the concept of reflexive verbs and how they work differently in French versus English. They were provided a handout with a list of reflexive -er verbs including s'amuser, s'appeler, se brosser (les dents, les cheveux), se doucher, se maquiller, s'habiller. Finally, they were instructed to ask a classmate about h/er morning routine—at least three actions. Homework for Mar 8-the monster assignment was collected; please hand yours in ASAP if you did not do so (they can be handed in to M Farquharson if Mme Zakus is not in the room)
-Monsieur did a lesson on negative expressions Homework for Mar 6/7-we learned about -ER verbs through a PowerPoint presentation and we practiced conjugating verbs through it as well; the handout of notes was provided afterwards
-M. Farquharson taught the second half of the double block and reinforced what we learned about -ER verbs through a variety of activities Homework for Mar 5-the quiz was today; please make arrangements with me ASAP if you were away to make it up (there is extended Flex Wed, Thurs & Fri this week)
-the remainder of the time was left for students to continue working on their missing monster assignment (Disparu!); the last day you can get corrections is Thursday Homework for Mar 4-M Farquharson taught the class about question words through a PowerPoint
-P2 only:using this knowledge, students read through the emails on CA25-28 and tried to classify the info on CA29 -P3 only: students completed the prediction activity on CA24, then verified answers by looking through the emails on CA25-28 -using two different colored pens/pencils/highlighters, students read through the emails and indiciated <<les mots amis>> (word friends) with one color and <<les mots deja connus>> (words already known) with the other color, ensuring to finish both emails 1 & 2 (students were encouraged to continue with emails 3 & 4 if they were fast) -a guided reading of emails 1 & 2 was done and students transferred info to CA29 Homework for Mar 1-we did an activity where students had to match descriptions to images posted around the room, then identify the vocab used in the descriptions (avoir, etre, body parts & adjectives); time was given for students to get started on identifying the words for three of the descriptions and we corrected it afterwards (please complete the remaining descriptions for next time as the sheet will be collected)
-a new assignment was given where students will creating a poster for a missing monster; the due date has been added to the calendar -the remaining time after the quiz on Tuesday will be for students to continue working on their monster poster (but you can of course work on your sentences this weekend) Homework for Feb 29-P2 only: we added notes about BAGS (Beauty, Age, Goodness, Size) adjectives to CA49; please check with a classmate for the notes if you were away
-we discussed key words to listen for with the images on CA18, then completed and corrected the listening activity -we then watched a video clip to comfirm predictions in regards to M. LeBlanc's appearance -M. Farquharson gave a lesson on the irregular verb avoir (you can download additional notes from the Downloads & Assignment info page if you would like) and did activities to practice the different expression we have that use avoir Homework for Feb 28-M. Farquharson led the class into a review of body parts and the verb etre as well as an introductory activity for adjectives
-magnetic cards were given to each student and everyone had to find their color family, then figure out how the adjectives change (if there were changes); once each group had claimed a section on the board, a representative for each group explained the rules for their adjective group -I added two more adjective groups on the board and we figured out the rules as a class (P3 only) -we compared our findings on the board to the chart on CA49 -we added notes about BAGS (Beauty, Age, Goodness, Size) adjectives (P3 only) Homework for Feb 27-using a stuffy, I introduced color & body parts vocabulary to the class

-we added notes to CA47 for telling time (L'heure); you can download the notes here if you were away so that you can add them to CA47 -to practice writing time in number and written form, we completed a time dominoes activity; students handed in their work regardless of whether they completed the activity in full or not -a worksheet was distributed to give further practice with writing time in number form and written form; we will complete some of the questions together in class Homework for Feb 21-we completed and corrected the listening activity on CA8

-we completed CA4 as a prediction activity -I gave new strategies to help view the video clip (mots amis, mots deja connus, les expressions, les gestes), then we watched it to confirm predictions for CA4 (some students also attempted to complete CA5) -we rewatched the video and completed CA5; we corrected it afterwards -be ready for the business card exchange next day and make sure to study! -the workbook for the first unit was distributed (for future units, you will only receive photocopies of the pages we will need); I went over some of the features of the workbook -students were given a worksheet where they had to go around the room and try to find the image that matched with one of the terms; a PowerPoint was presented afterwards to help correct the activity (a handout of the PowerPoint notes will be provided next day) -please complete CA2 for homework and note the information for your first quiz at the top of the homework page Homework for Feb 9-P2 only: we watched the virtual presentation for course selection
-our student teacher, M. Farquharson, introduced himself and gave a survey for the students to complete -we spent time practicing the business card dialog Homework for Feb 8-we corrected the <<Celebrations>> worksheet; please see Mme for the corrections if you were away or check with a classmate; the opposite side of the worksheet is optional for those who would like more practice (you would see Mme for the corrections)
-students were given time to complete <<Hier, Aujourd'hui, Demain>> (Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow) on the <<Calendrier>> worksheet (a reminder that the crosswords are optional) -I noted on the board what kind of "cheat sheet" information you are allowed to have on your dialog sheet; we then went through the remainder of the dialog -the criteria for the business card task was distributed and we went over it; the date for the task has been added to the calendar (remember, you will need 7 cards in total; one to hand in to Mme and the rest for exchanging with your different partners) Homework for Feb 7-we went over the words that students had to look up for the sentence that Mme Zakus provided and stressed the importance of using the dictionaries over Google Translate
-we learned about numbers using a handout -we took notes on the board for the months of the year and days of the week; please make sure to get the notes from a classmate if you were away (you can also download them from here) -please make sure to add notes to your dialogue sheet for how to say your phone number in French (put the numbers, then put the word for each individual number underneath) and your birthday (put le, then the number as well as the word to say it in French, then the month in French) -two handouts were distributed for homework; you only need to complete the first side for the <<Celebrations>> sheet and please ensure to use the dates for this school year (Sept 2023-Aug 2024); for the <<Calendrier>> sheet, you are welcome to attempt to complete the <<Hier, Aujourd'hui, Demain>> exercise (we will take a few minutes to complete it in class) Homework for Feb 6-we continued working through the final dictionary exercise and corrected it
-we had a brief discussion about which entries were more effective in finding the words needed -we learned about the French-English dictionaries that we have in the classroom and practiced using them by looking up "is" and "saw" -I provided a sentence for the class and underlined words for students to look up in the dictionaries (we will wrap up this activity next day) Homework for Feb 5-we played <<Qui suis-je?>>
-we corrected the nasal sounds -we completed and corrected the labels for the French sentences -we completed some of the entries for the final dictionary exercise (we will continue next day) Homework for Feb 2-we played <<Qui suis-je?>> again and added to the sheet that we had started; remember that it will be eventually collected for portfolios
-we corrected our sounds homework, then learned about nasals, semi-vowels, semi-consonnants & glides; only the nasals were assigned for homework -we corrected the labels for the English sentences (if not done), then transitioned into French sentences; some of the English sentences were translated into French and we looked at similarities and differences of sentence structure and placement of words -for homework (in addition to the nasal sounds), please label the French sentences (nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs) as best as you can; the point is NOT to know what the words mean, but rather take guesses based on what we learned about sentence structure and word placement Homework for Feb 1-we played a a second round of <<Qui suis-je?>>; a reminder that this will eventually be collected for your portfolio
-we corrected the sounds homework, then learned the next four vowel sounds; please underline the letters in the words that create each sound for homework -we discussed nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs in preparation for learning how to use a dictionary -a handout was given where students had to identify the different parts of sentences in English; we corrected the sentences (P2 only) Homework for Jan 31-we did the dialogue spelling our full name; please continue to practice the dialogue as it will take us a few lessons before we can work on the remainder; you are welcome to start work on good copies of your business card, just remember that the birthday cannot be finalized until we learn about dates and months in French
-I selected students at random to complete the dialogue with me -we played a game called <<Qui suis-je?>>, where I spelt names in French for students to write down; this sheet will eventually go into your portfolio (this is also a good way to practice your letters as well) -we went over the sounds that we learned yesterday, then learned the next four vowel sounds; if you did not already finish in class, please underline the letters in the words that create each sound for homework Homework for Jan 30-we learned the alphabet in French, then used it, along with the business card dialogue, to spell our name for two partners
-for homework, please practice spelling your name in full along with the dialogue -we learned about French sounds, and I provided examples on the board that demonstrate the various sounds -we learned about the first three vowel sounds and identified the letters creating the sounds on our handout; please complete this for homework if you did not get it done in class Homework for Jan 29-we opened with a quick survey of student preferences using images in a PowerPoint; we then talked about our experiences in French and student volunteers asked me questions
-we created a draft business card which will eventually be used for a business card exchange; we also received the dialogue that will be used for the exchange -we went over the course outline Homework for Jan 16-story drafts were returned to students
-menu assignments were returned to students -students worked on their final copy of their story and handed it in at the end of the period Homework for Jan 15-a reminder for those who have not handed in their menu & recipe assignment to do so ASAP (as well as any other missing assignments!)
-the rubric for your story assignment was distributed and we went over it; it is due at the end of the period next class -students worked on their drafts/notes and handed in all their work for today -at home, you are allowed to continue to look for verbs and vocab that you will need for your story; please do not use the internet or translators and ensure you are using only the resources that have been provided to you (notes, PowerPoints, the Mini guide from each unit) and you are allowed to work on whatever drawings/pictures you want to include with your story Homework for Jan 12-we corrected the remaining exercises on the adjectives worksheet
-we learned about -IR verbs through a PowerPoint; students wrote down the conjugations during the practice and as challenge, students could attempt to translate the English sentence provided by Mme into French (these were collected at the end of class) Homework for Jan 11-the menu and recipe assignment was collected from those who did not have it ready; please hand yours in ASAP if you were away
-we watched a music video to introduce the theme of the final unit (we will not be doing the unit in full) -we discussed the image on L70 to reinforce the theme of the unit (reduce, reuse, recycle) -we discussed the types of trash we see around the school -using L72-73, we reviewed adjectives and proper placement with BAGS adjectives -a handout was distributed for students to complete; we corrected some of the activities -please complete the remainder of the sheet for homework Homework for Jan 10-your drafts were returned and students used the rest of class to finish the good copy of their assignment to hand in
-you were allowed to take it home and hand it in next day provided that a) you had been handing your work each day OR b) you made sure to show Mme your work before leaving class Homework for Jan 9-the rubric for your menu and recipe project was provided and we went over it; tonight, you are allowed to prepare the art work for your menu (logo, drawings of your dishes, photos to represent ingredients in your dishes)

-a hand was provided to help familiarize with cooking utensils vocabulary as well as recipes; we corrected it afterwards (to help you further with thinking about recipe instructions, you can complete Part A on the reverse side of the sheet) -the remainder of the time was left for students to work on the framework of their menu and recipe assignment; you will add to it tomorrow and Wednesday will be to complete your good copy to hand in (which means none of the work will be going home) Homework for Dec 20-we continued with presentations (if any)

-we corrected CA12-13 -we discussed specialty dishes (family specialties as well as restaurant) -we completed the prediction activity on CA15, then watched the video to confirm predictions -we watched the video again and completed CA16; we corrected it afterwards -students worked on CA17-18 for the remaining time Homework for Dec 18-we continued with C'est Moi presentations and will hopefully conclude them next class

-we completed CA8, Partie A to practice the new concept; students were selected at random to share their sentences -we went over the info-type on L10 about JK Rowling; we discussed what personality type she may be, then I showed the class a few character names that have French origins (this website has extensive articles and information if you are curious) -we ended class by watching a music video (P4 also shared which sports were featured) Homework for Nov 16-we went over the personality test on L6-9 and translated two sentences for each personality type as well as did the totals for each; using the students on CA2, we figured out who took the test
